Meet the Agent: Ben Halterman

We’re proud of the team of agents we’ve assembled here at Nest Realty. We think they’re pretty awesome, and we think you will too. During our “Meet the Agent” series, we sit down with our agents to learn more about them, what makes them tick, and why they’re passionate about the real estate industry. In this installment, we chat with Ben Halterman, an agent with Nest Realty in Staunton, Virginia.

Nest Realty: Tell us a bit about yourself! What brought you to Staunton? Ben Halterman: I was born and raised in Augusta County, so I have always called this home. Both sides of my family have been here for generations, so the roots run deep.

NR: How did you get into real estate? BH: Both of my grandfathers were successful Realtors in the Valley who loved their jobs. I had great respect for those men. Both of them at various times in their life had told me they thought I would be a good agent one day. So that little nugget had always stuck with me. Two days after I lost my second grandfather, I walked into a real estate office to inquire about becoming an agent. It had finally clicked that I needed to take their advice.

NR: What was your previous career? How has that prepared you for real estate? BH: Eight years in business mergers/acquisitions and seven years in residential lending. Both of those careers set me up perfectly for real estate sales. Coming in the first day, I felt I had a good handle on the financing end of a transaction. I also had been involved in many business sales, which relates very closely to the sale of real estate. I’m thankful that I had a chance to sit at the closing table many times—that experience served me well.

NR: What led you to Nest Realty, as opposed to another brokerage? BH: Business built on relationships. That is exactly how I run my business, and Nest fits that mold perfectly. I had great respect for the Nest agents I knew working in the Shenandoah Valley office. I felt like their listings and the way they carried themselves was a cut above the rest. It intrigued me to know more. Then when I learned how much of their business was relationship driven, I wanted to take part in that.

NR: What is your favorite part of being an agent? BH: I love serving and helping people. I get to do this all day, every day, and I love it.

NR: What makes you different from other agents? What sets you apart? BH: My knowledge and experience of the area gives me a unique resourcefulness. My background in residential lending and business sales also brings a different kind of skill set to the table.

NR: What are five adjectives that describe you? BH: Consistent, listener, thorough, steady, and believer.

NR: Who would be your dream client? BH: I have a couple favorite bands I’d love to have as clients. It would be cool to have tickets and backstage passes whenever I wanted to go.

NR: If you had one piece of advice for a first-time home buyer, what would it be? BH: You’ve got to get in right to get out right.
